Control your other computers from a computer

Sitting at one computer, you can reach your others without picking up the phone. Every computer on your device list can control your other computers, as your phone does, from the Tealhand app.

  • Connect each computer to your phone (Connect your phone). There is no separate step: once two computers are on your device list, each one can reach the other.
  • On the computer you want to control, keep Remote control on. For a terminal, also turn SSH access on there.
  • With Network set to This network only, a computer that isn’t on the same network shows Not on this network. Set Public relays or your own relay in Settings to reach it anywhere.

In the Tealhand app, open Devices. Your other computers are under Connected devices. Click one to open its page:

Tab What you can do
Status See its CPU, GPU, memory, battery and busiest programs
Power Sleep, Shut down (after its 60-second notice), Wake it while it is offline, and Add a rule. Its rules are listed under Add a rule, each with Cancel rule
Files Browse its shared folders, download a file to this computer, Upload files, make a folder, rename and delete. Uploads and downloads lists each copy, with Stop
Terminal Open a terminal on it and run its saved commands, while its SSH access is on. Your phone approves a terminal first (below)

Every change shows a card first. More on each tab: The Tealhand app on a computer.

A computer has the same rights as your phone, and every gate on the other computer still applies:

  • Remote control off on the other computer stops every change, from a phone or a computer.
  • SSH access off stops every terminal, and every change to its saved commands.
  • Only its shared folders can be read or changed, through the same path checks.
  • Actions that run only at a computer itself (turning remote control on, sharing a folder, disconnecting a phone) are refused, as from a phone.
  • No fingerprint at the computer. A computer has no fingerprint key, so its commands need no fingerprint and no Windows Hello. The other computer’s own switches decide, except for the two things in the next section.
  • Your phone approves a terminal, and a saved command marked “Ask for the fingerprint”.
  • The device list stays your phone’s. A computer can’t add or remove devices. Connecting a new phone or computer, renaming and removing are done on the phone.

Opening a terminal on another computer, or running a saved command marked Ask for the fingerprint, waits for your phone:

  1. Click Open terminal (or Run) and confirm the card. Confirm spins and the card says “Approve on your phone…”.
  2. Your phone shows a notification and a message: “Studio PC wants to open a terminal on Cloud PC” (or “…wants to run Back up on Cloud PC”). In Chat it is Tealhand’s message, in Classic a row in the Inbox, each with Decline and Approve.
  3. Approve opens the card on the phone, which asks for your fingerprint. Approve only if you asked for it at that computer.
  4. The terminal opens, or the command runs. Decline refuses it.

The other computer waits a minute. With no answer it refuses: “Your phone didn’t approve it in time”. If no phone with Tealhand open is connected to it, it refuses at once: “Approve it on your phone: it must be online”. Open Tealhand on the phone, then try again.

The approval is your phone’s fingerprint key signing exactly that request: which computer asks, on which computer, what (a terminal, or that saved command), once, for a minute. The computer that asks can’t make one itself, and an approval can’t be used again or for anything else. Both computers’ Activity lists the request and the answer.

Whatever a computer changes on another computer (anything but a read) is told to that computer’s connected phones. You see it in the phone’s Inbox, in Chat, and as a notification while the app runs, for example “Studio PC deleted a.txt on Cloud PC”. The notice names a file or folder at most: never a path, a link or file content. The other computer’s Activity names the computer that did it.

If you didn’t do it, remove that computer on your phone: in Chat, hold the message and choose Remove ⟨computer⟩; in the Inbox, hold the notice; or open Devices on the phone. The phone sends the new device list to your computers: each one closes that computer’s connections and refuses its commands from then on (one that is offline gets the list when it is back).

Anyone at an unlocked computer on your device list, or a program running as your user there, can do most of what your phone can do on your other computers, without a fingerprint: shut them down and delete files in their shared folders. A terminal and a saved command marked for the fingerprint need your phone’s approval. What limits it:

  • each computer’s own Remote control and SSH access switches;
  • your phone’s fingerprint for a terminal and for marked saved commands;
  • the notice on your phone for every change;
  • removing the computer on your phone, which cuts it off at once.

Lock a computer when you leave it, and keep SSH access off where you don’t need it.
