Safe search settings on Google, Bing, YouTube and DuckDuckGo

SafeSearch is a filter in the search engine that hides explicit results. Each engine has its own switch: Google at google.com/safesearch, Bing in Settings › SafeSearch, YouTube’s Restricted Mode in the account menu, DuckDuckGo in Settings. To keep a child from turning it off, lock it through a supervised account or at the router with a filtering DNS.

Google

Open google.com/safesearch, choose Filter, Blur or Off. The setting follows the Google account; without an account it follows the browser. Parents with a Family Link child account can lock it there so the child cannot change it.

Bing and Microsoft Edge

On bing.com open the menu at the top right, Settings, then SafeSearch: Strict, Moderate or Off. Microsoft Family Safety can enforce it on a child’s Microsoft account across Windows and Edge.

YouTube

Click your profile picture, then Restricted Mode at the bottom of the menu. It hides videos flagged as mature and switches off comments. On a shared computer, lock it from the same menu so it needs the account password to change. YouTube Kids is the stricter option for young children.

DuckDuckGo

Open Settings from the menu on duckduckgo.com and set Safe Search to Strict. DuckDuckGo keeps no account, so the setting lives in the browser.

For the whole home: filter at the router

A per-engine switch can be flipped back by anyone who knows where it is. A filtering DNS on the router, such as a family filter from your DNS provider, forces SafeSearch on Google, Bing and YouTube for every device on the Wi‑Fi, including phones and consoles. Set it once in the router’s DNS settings.

A filter is not privacy

SafeSearch changes what results appear. It does not hide what is searched from the network, the provider or the search engine. For that, the connection itself has to be encrypted: a VPN keeps searches and sites out of view of the Wi‑Fi and the provider. Teal VPN’s DNS blocking can also remove ad and tracker domains for every app.
