Using a VPN on public Wi‑Fi: what changes?

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, reducing what the local Wi‑Fi network can see. HTTPS still matters: it protects the connection to the website itself. Neither makes an unsafe website trustworthy or a compromised phone safe.

Teal VPN Updated

A VPN encrypts the device-to-VPN-server connection. HTTPS separately protects the browser-to-website connection.

HTTPS and a VPN protect different connections

With HTTPS, the content exchanged with a website is encrypted between your browser and that website. A VPN adds a tunnel from your device to its exit server. The website normally sees the exit server’s IP address for traffic routed through the tunnel.

This does not remove trust from the equation. You move some visibility from the hotspot operator or internet provider to the VPN provider. Read the provider’s privacy policy rather than treating an encrypted tunnel as a promise of anonymity.

A simple routine for a new hotspot

  1. Confirm the network

Check the Wi‑Fi name with the venue. A familiar-looking network name alone does not establish who operates it.

  2. Complete the portal

Finish the venue’s login before starting your VPN. Be cautious about requests to install certificates or software.

  3. Connect and check

Open your VPN and wait for its connected state. If it cannot connect, use the hotel Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide below.

  4. Keep the usual protections

Use HTTPS, keep your device updated, and use strong account authentication. A VPN is an additional layer.

  5. Leave the network cleanly

Disable automatic joining for hotspots you do not intend to use again.

What a VPN does not fix

A VPN does not prevent a fake login page from asking for your password. It does not stop an account you sign into from identifying you, and it does not remove malware already on your device.

Some websites restrict VPN addresses. Some hotspots block VPN connections. If a connection is essential and the hotspot cannot support it, a trusted mobile connection may be more useful than repeatedly changing VPN settings.
