1. Finish the Wi‑Fi login first
Being connected to Wi‑Fi does not always mean you have internet access. Hotels often require a room number, access code, or acceptance of terms on a sign-in page called a captive portal.
Use Android’s “Sign in to Wi‑Fi network” notification if it appears. Confirm the network name with the hotel. A VPN or an always-on connection rule can sometimes prevent the login page from opening. If you pause protection to complete the portal, avoid opening other apps and reconnect immediately afterward. Do not ignore certificate warnings or install an unknown certificate to make a portal work.
2. Compare two networks
Try the same VPN location on mobile data, if available and within your data plan. This comparison helps separate an app or account problem from a restriction on the hotel network.
| What happens | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No internet before the VPN connects | Hotel login, Wi‑Fi signal, or a hotel outage. |
| VPN works on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi | The Wi‑Fi network may restrict a route or protocol. |
| VPN fails on both networks | App updates, account allowance, device settings, and service availability. |
| VPN connects but one website fails | That website may block the exit address; this does not necessarily mean the tunnel failed. |
3. Try the options your app actually supports
Reconnect once, then try another location included in your plan. If your app offers an obfuscated or alternative route, try that next. Changing routes can help when a network filters some VPN traffic, but it is not a guarantee.
Teal uses traffic obfuscation and can try another connection route. Available routes depend on your app version and plan. Keep the app current using the installation channel supplied by Teal; do not download a replacement from an unfamiliar APK website.
4. Check your allowance and Android settings
In Teal, look at Data today and your account status. Teal Free has a shared daily allowance of 500 MB. A spent allowance is different from a hotel blocking the VPN.
Android allows one active VPN service per user or profile. A second VPN, a work VPN, or an app that uses Android’s VPN permission can conflict with the connection. Also check whether Android is configured to block connections without a VPN. Menu names differ between phone manufacturers.
5. Send useful details to support
If the issue remains, tell support your Android version, Teal app version, selected location, the visible error, and whether the same connection works on mobile data. This is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling.
Do not send passwords, sign-in codes, private keys, or payment details. If you share a screenshot, cover personal notifications and your public IP. For a managed office network, ask the administrator about permitted VPN use.
