Teal VPN vs Proton VPN Free

Proton VPN Free gives unlimited data at medium speed on one device, with a server picked for you from 10 countries. Teal Free gives 500 MB a day on up to 2 devices through one location, Lithuania, with traffic obfuscation for Wi‑Fi that filters VPNs. Neither shows ads. Pick Proton for unlimited free data; pick Teal when you need two devices, a connection that holds on hotel Wi‑Fi, or an Android TV app with a free plan.

Where Teal Free is the better choice

Two devices instead of one, so a phone and a laptop share the same free account.

Networks that filter VPN traffic. Hotel, campus and office Wi‑Fi often drop plain VPN connections. Teal Secure obfuscates the traffic so it is harder to identify, and the app moves to another route by itself when one stalls, instead of showing “disconnected”. No VPN can promise to connect on every network, but this is what Teal is built around.

A known location. Proton picks a country for you; Teal Free always exits in Lithuania, which matters when a site must see the same region each time.

Android TV with a free plan, from Google Play, with the same account as your phone.

Where Proton VPN Free is the better choice

Unlimited data. If you watch video or download on a free VPN, Proton is the one free plan among the big names that does not meter you, only slows you to what Proton calls medium speed.

No account. On Android the Proton app connects without a sign-up. Proton AG is a Swiss company with years of track record, published audits of its no-logs policy, and open-source apps. A newer company like ours cannot claim the same history yet.

More platforms today, including iPhone, Fire TV and browser extensions.

Where they are the same

Neither shows ads, neither sells data, and both are paid for by their subscribers. Both have a kill switch and a protocol made for networks that block VPNs. Both say plainly what the free plan does not include, which is the first thing to check with any free VPN.

Neither makes you anonymous. The sites you sign into still know who you are, and a VPN does not fix a fake login page or malware.

How to pick

Choose Proton VPN Free if you need unlimited free data on one device and do not care which country you exit from.

Choose Teal Free if 500 MB a day covers your use (messaging, email, maps, banking, light browsing), you want it on two devices, or you keep losing the VPN on the Wi‑Fi you use most.

If you pay: Proton Plus is cheaper per month only on the 2-year plan paid up front; Teal Pro is $7.99 month to month or $3 a month on the yearly plan, with a 7-day trial first.
