A VPN for China needs obfuscation, nearby servers and a second route
A VPN for China has to disguise its traffic as ordinary web traffic, offer servers close to China, and switch routes on its own when one stops answering. Plain VPN connections, the kind most apps use by default, get recognised and dropped on China's strict networks within seconds or minutes.
Obfuscation is the feature that matters most. vpnMentor's roundup, updated 27 May 2026, says most VPNs do not work reliably in China and that the ones which do all scramble their traffic. Teal VPN calls its version Teal Secure: every connection on every plan is obfuscated, with nothing to switch on.
Nearby servers matter because every packet has to leave China and come back. Japan, South Korea and Singapore give the shortest trip; Teal VPN has servers in all three as of October 2026.
- Obfuscation is a paid add-on or a setting buried in a menu: poor fit
- Nearest server is in Europe or North America: expect slow pages
- The app has one connection method and no fallback: expect dead evenings
- Reviews say it worked 'last year' with no date since: treat as unknown
Which VPN for China works in 2026 depends on who tested it and when
As of October 2026 the names that keep coming up are Astrill, LETSVPN, PrivateVPN, TunnelBear and Private Internet Access, and the honest answer is that each one works for some travelers and fails for others.
The China Travel Planner, writing on 9 February 2026, uses LETSVPN on short trips and says ExpressVPN 'hardly' works for her now and Astrill is patchy. vpnMentor, updated 27 May 2026, puts Astrill first and warns connections can still drop even with the top providers. Two experienced sources, two different winners: that is the real state of things.
We have not run a test from inside China this week, so we will not claim a success rate for Teal VPN. What we can say is what the app does: Teal Secure obfuscation on every connection, and an automatic route switch that tries other paths when a network closes the one in use.
| VPN | What the sources say | Obfuscation | Noted limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astrill | vpnMentor's first pick (27 May 2026) for travelers and expats | Yes, built in | Travel Planner calls it patchy and expensive for short trips |
| LETSVPN | Travel Planner's go-to for short trips (9 Feb 2026) | Built for China's networks | 2 devices; little independent testing |
| PrivateVPN | vpnMentor's budget pick | Stealth settings you turn on yourself | Needs manual setup |
| TunnelBear | vpnMentor's beginner pick | Built in | Small server list |
| Private Internet Access | vpnMentor's pick for technical users | Yes, with settings | Shares an owner with vpnMentor |
| Teal VPN | Teal Secure on every plan; servers in Japan, Singapore, South Korea (Oct 2026) | Always on | No iPhone app; no in-China test we can show you this week |
Install, log in and test every VPN before you land in China
Install your VPN, pay for it, sign in and connect once before you board, because inside China most VPN websites and the app-store pages for VPN apps do not load.
All four of the top pages agree on this one point, and it is the most common mistake we hear about: people land, try to download, and cannot.

Pick two VPNs from two companies
A main one and a backup, with different server networks. The Travel Planner kept two installed the whole time she lived there.
Install on every device you are taking
Phone, laptop, tablet. Teal VPN has apps for Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and Android TV; the Pro yearly plan covers 10 devices, monthly and 6-month cover 5.
Sign in and connect at home
Open the app, connect to Japan or Singapore, load a page. A sign-in that fails at home will fail harder abroad.
Save the sign-in details offline
Put the email and password in your phone's notes app. Password managers that sync over the internet may not sync in China.
Turn on auto-connect on launch
So the first thing your phone does on hotel Wi-Fi is try the VPN, before any other app sends traffic.
Check for leaks before you leave
Run Teal VPN's leak test at tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test with the VPN on. The DNS line should show a server in your chosen country, not your home provider. dnsleaktest.com is a fine second opinion.
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube do not load in China without a VPN
Without a VPN, Google, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, ChatGPT and most Western news sites do not load in China, whether you are on hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM.
This is why most visitors want a VPN for China travel: not for privacy in the usual sense, but to keep email, maps and the family chat working. Expats add banking apps and work tools to the list.
The filtering is not uniform. It tightens around public holidays and politically sensitive dates, and hotel networks are often stricter than a phone on mobile data. A connection that worked on Monday can fail on Friday with nothing changed on your side.

If you visit China over a public holiday or a sensitive time of year, then your VPN might not work around this time
Nicola Armstrong, The China Travel Planner, 9 February 2026
When the VPN stops connecting in China, change network, server and route in that order
When a VPN stops connecting in China, the fix is usually one of four things: complete the Wi-Fi login page first, switch server, switch the connection route, or move to mobile data.
Hotel Wi-Fi is the number one cause in our support inbox. The VPN starts before you have accepted the hotel's login page, so nothing gets through. Turn the VPN off, open a browser, accept the page, then turn the VPN back on.
In Teal VPN the automatic route switch handles the third step for you: when the network closes the route the app is using, it tries other routes without you tapping anything. If it still fails after a minute, pick a different country by hand, then try your backup app.
Try first
- Accept the hotel login page, then reconnect
- Switch to Japan, Singapore or South Korea
- Toggle airplane mode on and off, reconnect
- Open your backup VPN
Skip these
- Downloading a new VPN once you are there
- Picking a server in Europe or the US (longest trip)
- Turning obfuscation off 'just to test'
Teal Free works in China for light use; Pro adds data, devices and a refund window
Teal Free gives you 500 MB a day on 2 devices with the same Teal Secure obfuscation as Pro, enough for maps, messages and email in China but not for video.
Teal VPN, made by Fxolio LLC in the United States, has a Free plan (500 MB a day) and a Pro plan, with apps for Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android TV and Chromebook. Pro is $7.99 a month, $24 for six months or $36 a year ($3 a month), with 30 days money-back. Payment is by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or crypto.
For a one-week trip the monthly plan at $7.99 is the cheap VPN for China option; for a move, yearly at $36 covers 10 devices. Both plans keep no browsing logs and show no ads.

Rules, eSIMs and iPhones: the three questions every traveler asks
We cannot tell you whether using a VPN in China is allowed in your situation; check the local rules before you travel, and note that the big review sites do not give a clear answer either.
An eSIM with a built-in VPN is a real option for short trips. Several travel eSIM sellers route your data through servers outside China, so Google and WhatsApp work without a separate app. The catch: it covers only that phone's mobile data, not hotel Wi-Fi or your laptop, so most people still want a VPN app as well.
On iPhone, Teal VPN has no app as of October 2026, so iPhone travelers need another provider from the table above. On Android, Windows, Mac and Linux the Teal apps are the same ones we ship everywhere; there is no special China build and nothing extra to configure.

Questions
What is the best VPN for China in 2026?
There is no single winner. Astrill, LETSVPN, PrivateVPN, TunnelBear and Private Internet Access all appear in 2026 tests with mixed results, and Teal VPN offers Teal Secure obfuscation on every plan. Pick two from different companies and install both before you fly.
Does Teal Free work in China?
Teal Free uses the same Teal Secure obfuscation and the same servers as Pro, with 500 MB a day on 2 devices. That covers maps and messaging; we cannot promise it connects on every network in China.
Which server should I pick in China?
Japan, South Korea or Singapore, the three closest countries in Teal VPN's list. Europe and North America add hundreds of milliseconds to every page.
Can I download a VPN once I am in China?
Usually not. VPN websites and the app-store pages for VPN apps generally do not load inside China, which is why every guide says to install first.
Is there a Teal VPN app for iPhone in China?
Not yet; Teal VPN has no iOS app as of October 2026. Astrill and TunnelBear both have iPhone apps according to vpnMentor's 27 May 2026 roundup.
Will a VPN work for TikTok, Telegram or ChatGPT in China?
If the VPN connects, those apps behave as they do at home, since your traffic exits in Japan or another country. The app itself must already be installed on the phone.
Does a VPN slow things down in China?
Expect it to. Traffic leaves China, reaches the server and comes back, so speeds are lower than at home. A nearby server in Japan or Singapore helps most.
