India VPN: which one to pick and how to use it

An India VPN gives you an Indian IP address from abroad or protects you on networks inside India. Teal VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and Windscribe all list an India location as of October 2026, mostly on virtual servers. Teal VPN includes India on the Free plan and on Pro.

Teal VPN Updated

Teal Free includes India with 500 MB a day. No VPN can promise every site or network will work, so check your address before you log in.

Which India VPN is best depends on the direction you need

The best India VPN for you depends on whether you want an Indian IP address from abroad or protection on shared and strict networks while you are inside India.

As of 30 October 2026, Teal VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and Windscribe all list an India location, and most of them serve it from virtual servers hosted outside the country. Security.org's August 2026 test settled on NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access and ExpressVPN after what it describes as two months of testing and 300 speed tests.

Teal VPN, made by Fxolio LLC, has a Free plan (500 MB a day) and a Pro plan, with apps for Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android TV and Chromebook. India is one of its 14 server countries on both plans. One honest limit applies to every row below: no VPN is guaranteed to connect on every network, and no provider can promise that an Indian site will treat a virtual server as Indian.

An India VPN server gives you an Indian IP address from the USA

Connecting to an India server makes websites see an Indian IP address, which is what Indian services that only answer visitors inside the country need to see.

People use it for a bank login that rejects foreign addresses, the income tax portal, an employer's India-only intranet, Indian news sites, or buying a subscription at the India price. Windscribe's India page lists the same uses, and they match the emails we get from customers who moved to the US and still pay an electricity bill back home.

Streaming is where we stay quiet. Several India VPN pages promise specific video services; we have not tested them and do not promise that any streaming service works through Teal VPN.

Inside India, a VPN protects you on public networks and keeps working where other VPNs stop

Inside India, the main job of a VPN is to encrypt your traffic on shared Wi-Fi and to keep connecting on networks that restrict VPNs.

Café, hotel, airport and metro Wi-Fi in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru is often unencrypted. A VPN wraps everything your phone sends, so the network operator sees one encrypted stream to one server instead of every site you open. Windscribe's page makes the same point about tech-park Wi-Fi in Hyderabad and Bangalore, and we agree with it.

Teal Secure is the name of Teal VPN's connection mode: it obfuscates every connection on every plan, so VPN traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS, and the app tries other routes by itself when a network closes one. That helps on strict networks; it does not guarantee a connection on every one.

  • The app connects, then drops after a few seconds
  • Ordinary sites load but the VPN never gets past 'connecting'
  • One server works and the next one in the same country does not
  • Switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data fixes it at once

Most India locations are virtual servers because of a 2022 record-keeping rule

Most VPNs now serve their India location from virtual servers hosted outside India because a rule introduced in June 2022 requires VPN operators running servers inside India to keep user records.

A virtual server hands you an Indian IP address while the machine sits in another country. Your traffic still carries an India address, but the provider keeps no hardware in India and so nothing to hand over. Security.org reports that NordVPN and Proton VPN use this approach, and its testers focused on servers in surrounding countries for the same reason.

We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice; check the local rules before you travel. What we can state plainly is what Teal VPN keeps: no browsing logs, on any plan, from any server, as of 30 October 2026.

Choose the India server for Indian services and a nearby country for speed

Pick India when the site must see an Indian address; pick the closest other country when you only want encryption and speed.

From inside India, the nearest Teal VPN locations are Singapore and Japan, and a nearby server usually gives better speed than a distant one because every packet travels less far. Windscribe's Auto Pilot and similar auto-pick features make that choice for you; in the Teal VPN app you pick the country yourself from the list.

  1. Decide what the site needs to see

A bank, tax portal or India-priced shop needs an Indian address, so choose India. Email, banking from a café, or a site that simply does not load needs any server, so choose the nearest country.

  2. Connect, then check the address

Open tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test; it shows your public IP and the DNS servers answering your lookups, with no sign-in, and works with any VPN. A search for 'what is my IP' gives you a second opinion from your search engine.

  3. Fix a site that still says you are abroad

Clear the site's cookies or use a private window, then try again. Some Indian sites check more than the IP address, and some treat every virtual server as foreign; no VPN can promise a specific site will accept it.

  4. Fix a slow connection

Switch to the nearest country, then to the next nearest. If a server is slow at 8 pm and fine at noon, it is congestion, and a different server in the same country often helps.

Setting up an India VPN takes five minutes on a phone, laptop or TV

Setting up a VPN for India is the same on every device: install the app, sign in, pick India or a nearby country, press connect.

Teal VPN runs on Android, Android TV, Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook (Play app or Chrome extension) and as a Chrome, Edge or Firefox extension. The yearly plan covers up to 10 devices, the monthly and 6-month plans cover 5, and Teal Free covers 2. There is no iOS app in Teal VPN's list as of 30 October 2026, so we could not test an iPhone.

  1. Install the app

Get Teal VPN from Google Play, the Chrome Web Store or tealvpn.com. On Windows, Mac and Linux the download is on the site; on Android TV it is in the Play Store on the TV itself.

  2. Sign in with an email

Teal Free needs nothing beyond an email address. Pro uses the same sign-in on every device you own, up to the limit of your plan.

  3. Pick a location

Choose India for Indian services. Choose Singapore, Japan or another nearby country for speed when the address does not matter.

  4. Connect and test

Press connect, then open tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test and confirm the IP and DNS lines show the country you picked.

  5. Use the extension for browser-only traffic

If you only want Chrome, Edge or Firefox to go through India while the rest of the device stays local, use the Teal VPN extension instead of the desktop app.

Teal Free gives 500 MB a day on an India server; Pro costs $3 a month yearly

Teal Free includes the India location with 500 MB a day on 2 devices, and Teal Pro removes the data cap for $36 a year, $24 for six months or $7.99 a month.

500 MB a day is enough for a bank login, a tax form and email; it is not enough for video. The Free plan needs nothing beyond an email, and Teal Secure obfuscation is on at that tier too, not only on Pro.

Pro has a 30-day money-back period, and payment is by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or crypto. Our opinion: most people searching for an India VPN at no cost need the Free plan for a few logins a month, not a paid plan, and should only pay when the 500 MB runs out.

Questions

Is it legal to use a VPN in India?

We do not give legal advice, so check the local rules before you travel. A rule from June 2022 asks VPN operators with servers inside India to keep user records, which is why most providers now serve India from virtual servers.

Can I get an India VPN from the USA?

Yes. Install the app in the US, pick the India location and connect; sites then see an Indian IP address. Teal VPN includes India on the Free plan, so you can test a login with 500 MB a day before paying.

Does Teal VPN have a server in India?

Yes. India is one of Teal VPN's 14 server countries as of 30 October 2026, on both Teal Free and Pro.

Which VPN works best with Jio and Airtel networks?

We have not run tests on Jio or Airtel this month, so we will not name a winner. Teal Secure obfuscates every connection and tries other routes when one is closed, which is built for mobile networks that restrict VPNs, but no VPN is guaranteed on every network.

Is there a VPN for India in Chrome?

Teal VPN has a Chrome extension (also Edge and Firefox) that routes only the browser through India. For apps outside the browser, use the Windows, Mac, Linux or Android app.

Will an India VPN slow down my connection?

Usually a little, and more when the server is far from you. From inside India, Singapore or Japan is normally faster than Europe or the US; from the US, an India location adds the distance either way.

How much does a VPN cost in India?

Teal VPN charges the same everywhere: $7.99 a month, $24 for six months or $36 a year ($3 a month), with 30 days money-back on Pro. Teal Free costs nothing and gives 500 MB a day.
