New Zealand VPN: what works, what Teal offers, and what it does not

A New Zealand VPN either gives you a New Zealand IP address or protects you while you are in New Zealand. Teal VPN has no New Zealand server as of 31 October 2026; its nearest location is Australia. VyprVPN and Trust.Zone list New Zealand locations.

Teal VPN Updated

Teal VPN has no New Zealand server as of 31 October 2026. Australia is nearest; for a New Zealand IP, pick a service that lists one.

Teal VPN has no New Zealand server, so Australia is the nearest option

Teal VPN does not run a server in New Zealand as of 31 October 2026. Teal VPN, made by Fxolio LLC, has a Free plan (500 MB a day) and a Pro plan, with apps for Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android TV and Chromebook. Its 14 server countries are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Lithuania, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

We would rather say that in the first line than have you pay and find out later. If you live in New Zealand and want a VPN for everyday protection, Australia is the closest Teal location and the one we would pick. If you need a New Zealand IP address from abroad, Teal VPN cannot give you one today, and the table further down names services that say they can.

There is no iPhone app either. Teal VPN runs on Android, Android TV, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, plus Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions. If you only own an iPhone, you need a different service for now.

Two different people type 'New Zealand VPN', and they need different servers

Some people searching for a New Zealand VPN live there and want protection; others are abroad and want a New Zealand IP address. The two needs point to different servers, and most pages on the subject blur them together.

If you are in New Zealand, you do not need a New Zealand server at all. You need a server close enough for good speed, a no-logs policy, and an app that keeps working on strict networks. Australia does that job in Teal VPN.

If you are abroad and want sites to see you as a New Zealand visitor, only a service with a New Zealand server will do. Teal VPN is not one of them as of 31 October 2026, so for that need read the comparison and skip the Teal pitch.

You are in New Zealand

  • Pick the nearest server (Australia in Teal VPN)
  • Protection on café and hotel networks matters most
  • Your home provider sees one encrypted tunnel, not your sites
  • Teal Free covers light use at 500 MB a day

You are abroad and want a New Zealand IP

  • Only a service with a New Zealand server works
  • VyprVPN, Trust.Zone and TunnelBear list one (31 October 2026)
  • Check the IP you get at tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test
  • Teal VPN cannot do this today

Best VPN for New Zealand: five named options compared

Of the services we checked on 31 October 2026, VyprVPN, Trust.Zone and TunnelBear list a New Zealand location; Teal VPN does not. The table shows what each one states on its own pages, not what we could verify from inside New Zealand.

Our one opinion: we would not install a Play Store app whose whole product is one country's IP address and whose operator we cannot name. A VPN sees every connection you make, so the company behind it matters more than the flag on the icon.

How to change your VPN to New Zealand in five steps

Changing your VPN to New Zealand means picking a service that lists a New Zealand server, choosing that location in the app, and checking the IP you actually got. The check is the step most people skip.

  1. Pick a service that lists New Zealand

As of 31 October 2026 VyprVPN, Trust.Zone and TunnelBear list a New Zealand location. Teal VPN does not, so do not install it for this job.

  2. Install the app and sign in

Use the vendor's own download page, not a third-party store listing. VyprVPN's New Zealand page lists Android, iOS, Mac and Windows apps.

  3. Choose New Zealand in the location list

Open the server or location list, search for New Zealand, and connect. Wait for the app to say connected before you open anything else.

  4. Check the IP you got

Open tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test. It shows your public IP and the DNS servers answering your lookups, needs no sign-in and works with any VPN. A 'what is my IP' search in your browser is a fair second opinion.

  5. If you are in New Zealand and use Teal VPN, pick Australia

Open the Teal VPN app, choose Australia, connect, then run the same check. The IP line should show an Australian address.

What a VPN does for you in New Zealand: an encrypted tunnel to one server

A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server, so a café network and your internet provider see one encrypted connection to one address instead of the list of sites you visit. That is the whole mechanism; everything else follows from it.

Sites that limit access by location see the server's country, not yours. From New Zealand through Teal VPN's Australia server you appear to be in Australia. We have not tested music or video services from New Zealand and make no promise about any of them.

On networks that restrict VPNs, Teal Secure obfuscates every connection on every plan so the traffic looks like ordinary web traffic, and the app tries other routes by itself when a network closes one. No VPN is guaranteed to connect on every network, and we have not tested this on a New Zealand cellular network.

Speed depends mostly on distance, so pick the nearest server and measure it

The closest server usually gives the best speed, so from New Zealand choose Australia in Teal VPN, or a New Zealand server in a service that has one. Every extra ocean the traffic crosses adds delay you can feel on calls and games.

We have not run a speed test from New Zealand, so we will not quote a number. None of the vendor pages we read for New Zealand publish one either, which tells you how much weight to put on 'fastest' claims.

Test your own line before you blame the VPN. Run a speed test with the VPN off, then on, from the same spot and the same device, and switch server once before deciding.

  • Run a speed test with the VPN off first, then on
  • Confirm the connected location at tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test
  • Switch to the next-nearest server once before judging
  • On Wi-Fi, try a wired or 5 GHz connection to rule out the local network
  • In Teal VPN, let the automatic route switch finish before you reconnect by hand

A New Zealand VPN that costs nothing: Teal Free covers protection, not a New Zealand IP

Teal Free gives you 500 MB a day on 2 devices with nothing but an email address, which covers protection in New Zealand but cannot give you a New Zealand IP. The Free plan uses the same 14 countries and the same Teal Secure obfuscation as Pro.

500 MB a day is enough for browsing, email and maps on a café network; it is not enough for video. When you hit the cap, the app stops for the day rather than slowing you down.

Teal Pro costs $7.99 a month, $24 for six months or $36 a year ($3.00 a month) as of 31 October 2026, with a 30-day money-back window. The yearly plan covers up to 10 devices; monthly and six-month plans cover 5. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or crypto.
